Dear colleagues and friends,

»The tasks of a literary publisher may have changed as far as the details of the on-going process of literary communication are concerned, but on the whole they have remained the same: to be ready for the author, for the originality of his work, and to contribute to his significance.« Siegfried Unseld, 1978.

Much has happened since 1978, and yet, what Unseld outlines is still our credo today. The rights trade is much more than just a business, it opens spaces, bridges cultures, connects people. We’re delighted to represent the work of some of the best writers and most influential thinkers worldwide, writing in German and many other languages. The following pages are designed to offer information and to create inspiration, for together with you, we will make those books and ideas travel.

Company History

Founded in 1950, Suhrkamp Verlag is one of Germany’s leading publishers of literary fiction, non-fiction, theory, poetry, and plays. Our literary programme includes classics of German and international literature such as Hermann Hesse, Bertolt Brecht, Samuel Beckett, and Sylvia Plath, along with contemporary voices like Judith Schalansky, Peter Handke, and Serhiy Zhadan. Our academic titles are situated primarily in the humanities, with a focus on the Frankfurt School and the works of theorists such as Theodor W. Adorno, Jürgen Habermas, and Axel Honneth. Suhrkamp Verlag is based in Berlin.
