»Us artists give our lives for something that is worth the death is causes.«
The circus has fascinated Alexander Kluge since his earliest childhood and it is a phenomenon of his devotion that is preserved throughout his cinematic work (Die Artisten in der Zirkuskuppel, ratlos) and up to the most recent of his literary works. The circus has fascinated Alexander Kluge since his earliest childhood and it is a phenomenon of his devotion that is preserved throughout his cinematic work (Die Artisten in der Zirkuskuppel, ratlos) and up to the most recent of his literary works. In it he finds both the »shadow image of work« and the epitome of human excellence from love to war to revolution. For the performances presented in the circus are surfaces onto which utopias are projected, they offer a tangible representation of developments within civilisation with its nearly infinite possibilities and sometimes inevitable crashes – regardless of whether applause is roaring or the artists are counting their limbs on the floor of the ring.

By using semantic fields, images and film sequences (QR codes), the book presents a broad panorama on 170 pages, in which perplexed artists and sophisticated surgeons cavort alongside the fighter pilots in the Circus of the Air, sans-culottes drunken with their omnipotence, and last but not least: the animals, to whose superhuman performances between training and flight this book erects a permanent memorial.
»Each essay opens a door that, when passed through, makes both history and present transparent to the reader. Kluge digs deep, enlightens, makes you addicted to more insight and knowledge. ... If you are hungry for more after reading [The Book of Commentaries], take a look at Circus / Commentary« Harald Loch, neues deutschland

»New facts and old fictions, emerging memories and topical observations, all of this motivates Kluge to explore the makings of his life and thought, [...] to dig further and deeper into the inventory [...] The 170 pages of Circus / Commentary form a rather playful panorama.« Julia Schröder, Deutschlandfunk

»Alexander Kluge unfolds concepts like maps, he uses quotations as building blocks, Kluge is a great collector who knows how to assemble his pieces into new metaphors and new associations. Alexander Kluge's volumes hold wonderfully adventurous escape routes for those despairing of our time’s dead-end way of thinking.« Ö1
