The gigantic cranes in the shipyards of Gdynia and Pula were the pride of these two cities until just recently. They helped build 300-metre-long ocean liners in the Polish city of Gdynia, and ships used to transport thousands of sheep alive from New Zealand to Europe – complete with a desalination plant – in Pula, Croatia. But all the inventiveness and the talent for improvisation practised to perfection under socialism were of no use: soon after joining the EU, the shipyards went bankrupt, partly because competition law counts for more than a global industrial policy in Brussels.

The »Shipyard Collective« led by Ulf Brunnbauer and Philipp Ther delves deep into the everyday life of the two companies. The social scientists and historians reconstruct their decline and analyse the great transformation that has been unsettling Europe since the 1970s.
