World Premiere of Film Adaptation of Peter Weiss's The Investigation

The world premiere of the film adaptation of the documentary play The Investigation by Peter Weiss took place on 4 July 2024 during Filmfest München. The official cinema release will take place later in the month. The play, which premiered simultaneously at several international theatres in 1965, documents the first of the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials, which began in 1963. Peter Weiss condensed the court transcripts into a sensational and much-discussed “oratorio”.

The play is considered a modern classic and a pioneering example when it comes to attempts to deal with Germany’s Nazi past through art. The current feature film adaptation uses the complete text of the oratorio as a script — without any abridgments, rearrangements, or additions. The film is directed by RP Kahl, produced by Alexander van Dülmen, and distributed by Leonine Studios. The extensive cast includes numerous prominent figures from German stage and screen, including Christiane Paul, Nicolette Krebitz, Rainer Bock, Clemens Schick, Bernhard Schütz, and many more.
