By the Sward tells the story of a contemporary young woman attempting to escape the trials and tribulations of everyday life with physically demanding work in a remote sheep farm in the south of France. Noa, Wittig’s protagonist, suffers from anxiety and the state of the world. We get very close to Noa, especially when she is in crisis. At the same time the author paints the picture of a landscape whose existence is threatened by the climate crisis and that is everything but an idyll. Finally, we accompany Noa on an unexpected and liberating awakening.
