We are delighted to announce that Ariane Koch receives one of this year’s Swiss Literature Awards for her debut novel The Imposition.

The jury’s statement reads as follows:

»In The Imposition, Ariane Koch stages an encounter with the other and the unexpected in the realm of the familiar and the ordinary. In a way that is as clever as it is funny, the narrator constantly enriches the description of her guest without ever letting it become unambiguous ... The author condenses the vignette-like episodes of the novel into an artful fabric that revolves around a topic of great topicality with playful curiosity and undogmatic observation. Oscillating between concreteness and inextricable ideas, she opens up linguistic spaces in which not only the relationship between the characters, but also the relationship between language and object is constantly renegotiated.«

Every year, the Federal Office of Culture FOC honours writers with the Swiss Literature Awards. In addition to the Swiss Grand Prix for Literature, annual prizes are awarded for individual works published in the past year. The winners receive 25,000 Swiss francs each and are supported with targeted promotional measures to create more national exposure for their works. The award ceremony will take place on May 25, 2022, just before the Solothurn Literature Days.
