On 18 July 2024, Axel Honneth celebrates his 75th birthday.
Honneth is Professor for Social Philosophy at Goethe University Frankfurt and the Jack B. Weinstein Professor of the Humanities in the department of philosophy at Columbia University. He was also director of the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt between 2001 and 2018, the home of what is known as the »Frankfurt School«.
Honneth is known primarily for his work on relations of power, recognition, and respect, as in major early works
Critique of Power,
The Struggle for Recognition, and
Disrespect. More recently, Honneth has made major contributions toward a renewal and revitalisation of the concept of socialism in
The Idea of Socialism and toward a reframing of the role of labour within democratic structures, in
The Working Sovereign.
Several of Honneth’s former students have also gone on to become prominent theorists and writer in their own right, such as Rahel Jaeggi, Hartmut Rosa, Carolin Emcke and Daniel Loick.
