We are delighted to inform you about the upcoming release of the motion picture adaptation of Hermann Hesse's masterpiece Narziß und Goldmund (1930). Adapted for the screen and directed by Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Stefan Ruzowitzky (Foreign Language Film at the 80th Academy Awards for The Counterfeiters), the movie was filmed in Austria and the Czech Republic. The cast includes Jannis Niewöhner as Goldmund, Sabin Tambrea as Narcissus and Henriette Confurius as Lene. The film premiere was held in Berlin on March 2, 2020 and the movie is going to appear in German and Swiss-German cinemas on March 12, 2020, and the following day in Austria. Narziß und Goldmund, »the Game Of Thrones of the 1930s« (Carsten Baumgardt, filmstarts.de), has been longlisted for the German Film Prize.

During his lifetime, Narziß und Goldmund was Hermann Hesse's most successful book. The fact that it hasn''t lost any of its appeal is proven by translations into more than 30 languages and continuously high sales in Germany.

This novel, set in the Middle Ages, and which was to Hesse the »result of an examination of 2,000 years of Christianity and 1,000 years of German history«, embodies the polarity between sensuality and intellect, fantasy and reason and their inextricable connection in art in the lust for life of the adventurer and artist Goldmund and the asceticism and intellectuality of his friend Narcissus.

On the occasion of the film release, Suhrkamp Verlag has published a movie tie-in.
