Nora Bossong receives Thomas Mann Prize 2020

For her œuvre, Nora Bossong is awarded the Thomas Mann Prize (endowed with 25.000 Euros) by the Hanseatic City of Lübeck and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. Since 2010, the prize is awarded in Munich and Lübeck in alternation. It is the result of the combination of formerly two separate prizes, the Thomas Mann Prize of the City of Lübeck (awarded since 1975) and the Great Prize for Literature awarded by the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.

Nora Bossong was one of the most versatile contemporary German-language authors, the seven-member jury stated in the explanation for their decision. Since her debut Gegend (2006), a profound and laconic domestic novel, she had presented volumes of poetry and essays as well as four novels that dealt with painfully relevant problem areas of our times while distinguished by great linguistic virtuosity at the same time. Suhrkamp Verlag most recently published Nora Bossong’s bestselling novel Schutzzone (2019), which, set in Burundi, Geneva and The Hague, revolves around the queston of what the UN can even achieve – and what havoc it wreaks.
