Ingeborg Bachmann would have been celebrating her 90th birthday today.

In recent years, Suhrkamp Verlag has published major works from Ingeborg Bachmann’s estate, such as Herzzeit, the correspondence with Paul Celan and the Kriegstagebuch (War Diary), both of which have been translated into numerous languages. In autumn 2016, Suhrkamp is going to publish the first two volumes of the Collected Works by Ingeborg Bachmann. This will be the first complete edition of prose, poetry and essays, as well as the radio plays, libretti and correspondences. Designed to be released in thirty volumes, it will present already published works in commented editions and will furthermore make available all previously unknown works from Ingeborg Bachmann’s estate. Das Buch Goldmann and Male oscuro. Notizen, Traumnotate und Briefe aus der Zeit der Krankheit are expected to be published on November 9th, 2016.

Ingeborg Bachmann was born on June 25, 1926 in Klagenfurt. She began to write when she was at school. She studied Philosophy in Innsbruck, Graz and eventually in Vienna, where she met, among others, Hans Weigel. In 1949 Bachmann wrote her dissertation entitled »The Critical Reception of the Existential Philosophy of Martin Heidegger«. She subsequently started working for the Allied radio station Rot-Weiss-Rot. Her friendship with Paul Celan majorly influenced her thought. Ingeborg Bachmann is considered one of the most important German-language poets and writes of the 20th century. She died in Rome on October 17, 1973 .
