Since 1990, 3 October has marked the day of the official reunification of Germany. To mark this occasion, we have put together a selection of titles by authors who were born, grew up, or worked in East Germany. Some of these writers deal with life in the former East Germany head on, while others only touch upon it indirectly. Through the breadth and diversity of these works though, a more expansive perspective is opened up, one that looks across the scar left behind by the Berlin Wall to see not just Germany as a whole but also its relationships to the rest of Europe and the world. A world in which borders are constantly being erased only to be cobbled back together again.
This collection ranges from absolute classics of East German literature like Christa Wolf’s
Divided Heaven to brand new works by some of the most unique voices in German letters, like Lutz Seiler, Durs Grünbein or Judith Schalansky. You can click on the covers to see more information about the individual works, and feel free to contact
the Rights Manager for your region to inquire about a particular title.
