Stasiuk would have preferred to be a rock star. In this »Bildungsroman«, penned in less than two weeks he lets us know why that career never came to be.
There are few examples where adolescent rebellion, not only under communism, has been described more pointedly or more scathingly. Being drafted into the army signals the end for Stasiuk of nights on the town, listening to Lou Reed and Jimi Hendrix, beer and drugs. In December 1981, when martial law was introduced in Poland, Stasiuk did not return to his barracks and ended up in prison. When he was released he was celebrated as a hero of the resistance, but he was neither a pacifist nor a dissident - he simply couldn't be bothered any more….
