»Carnival is the story of Felix Golub, who deserts from the German Wehrmacht and survives the time until liberation in a small Austrian town disguised as a maid. At the end of the war, Felix Golub saves the town from a last defensive battle, and thus from senseless destruction, as the commander of the last draft has fallen in love with the ostensibly innocent maid and wants to seduce her. To avoid being found out as a deserted soldier and executed in the very last moments of the war, Golub initially plays along with the commander’s advances until he gets an opportunity to disarm him and force him to surrender. The fact that they are in debt to a coward in drag becomes the cause of laboriously suppressed and finally violently discharged aggression on the part of the town’s inhabitants when Felix Golub, who returns to the town twelve years after the war, is elected carnival princess.« Robert Menasse
