The Sea in the Radio / Im Radio das Meer
Journal Sentences
With this book, Jürgen Becker moves within the liminal space of literary possibilities. After the journal novel Schnee in den Ardennen and the journal stories Die folgenden Seiten, all that remains are journal sentences left behind by the stream of perceptions, memories and imaginings.

With this book, Jürgen Becker moves within the liminal space of literary possibilities. After the journal novel Schnee in den Ardennen and the journal stories Die folgenden Seiten, all that remains are journal sentences left behind by the stream of perceptions, memories and imaginings.

They are sentences to which, in particles, an entire biography is reduced. They provide the moment with a story whose past remains unsaid. They bring into focus experiences that a poem or a novel could wait for.

They are sentences that were discovered by chance or that emerged after a great amount of research within the landscape of consciousness. They name the banal as well as the absurd, the close and the distant, the disturbances of childhood and the irritations of old age. Jürgen Becker’s concept of reacting to a reality that often seems so unreal in the form of a journal comes to a rigorous consequence here: the minimalisation of writing.
»The further one reads, the clearer the layers of this writing experiment emerge. Memories, quotations, thoughts on writing or on the way memory works are placed next to observations and dream images. At times, sentences repeat themselves or are continued and varied. The journal sentences are this autho’s most consistent attempt to date to do justice to the scattering of associations.« Nico Bleutge, Süddeutsche Zeitung

»The Sea in the Radio is more than a literary mosaic whose tiny pieces form a clear picture. In fact, the sentences soon develop the spell of a great concert. The author himself points the way to the musical by ending each of the three chapters, called ›booklets‹, with the performance of a huge orchestra. A sea of sounds.« Martin Oehlen, Frankfurter Rundschau

This poem is made up of a number of short poems – a contradictory context that comes about when writing follows the leaps of associations, the permanent change of times, the back and forth between topicality and memory. Journal-like writing that searches for the components of biography and where they appear in everyday events, in the repertoire of media and images, in manners of speaking...

»Thinking about my life and the memories of it, all I can think of are sentences, sometimes just a few, sometimes a few more.« This is the sentence Jörn Winter says at the end of the book, in which a journal of moments and memories is created from individual sentences and whole stories. Both the experience of the moment and the memory of the past create the space of simultaneity...

»In the poems in this volume, which were written over the course of four decades, the Bay of Cologne speaks to us, its monstrousness, its damaged beauty, its wealth of contradictions, of images and constant sounds, its never-ending fascination... The Bay of Cologne is not a poetic theme, it has not given rise to a literary tradition, and it does nothing to contribute to this of its own...

The guests seem to have been invited by the zeitgeist, at least that’s what their...

This is where the narrator begins his »journal«, and what he records are events in the immediate surroundings and in the distant past, in dreams and in reality. Jürgen Becker’s observations roam the hilly landscape of his Rhenish homeland, wander to Berlin and the German East, focus on images of the...

Jürgen Becker’s first novel would not have been written without the fall of the Berlin Wall, without reunification. Since then, Jörn Winter has been travelling back and forth between the Elbe and the Oder, Rügen and the Thuringian Forest. He is drawn to Lake Schwieloch in the Mark Brandenburg, where his mother died. Fifty years after her death, which was never solved, he...

Having returned from a trip to Berlin, Jörn talks about ice skaters on the frozen Lake Wannsee, and soon his recollections turn to the wartime winters of his childhood.

Jörn is concerned with those memories that are like little islands in the sea of the past. Linking them together and expanding them is his narrative impulse, whereby, after initially uncertain tactile...
