Philosopher and sociologist Jürgen Habermas has celebrated his 80th birthday on June 18, 2009. For this occasion, he has put together a systematic selection of important texts, some of which have never before been published, which uncover the philosophical crux of his extensive works.
Habermas writes an explanatory introduction to each volume, in which he outlines the essential features and motives of his philosophical thoughts on the themes of language and truth, reason and morality, rights and democracy, as they have developed in debate with the individual sciences. The volumes, which are also available individually, can therefore take the place of unwritten philosophical monographs and offer comprehensive insight into a thinking, the surface of which has hardly been scratched in contemporary intellectual history.
»I have not written any books on the themes that lie at the core of my philosophical interests – neither on the language theory fundamentals of sociology, nor on the formal pragmatic conception of language and rationality, nor on discourse ethics or political philosophy or on the status of post-metaphysical thought. This peculiar fact first became apparent to me through this retrospective; and I don’t know, whether I should just look at it as a deficiency.« (from the Foreword)
Jürgen Habermas was born in Düsseldorf in 1929. He has taught at the universities of Heidelberg and Frankfurt as well as at the University of California, Berkeley, among others. He is the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates and awards. In 2001 he was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
