Morality is commonly understood to be the domain of philosophy. And therefore it could appear all the more surprising that Niklas Luhmann – one of the most influential representatives of sociology in the 20th century – from the end of the 1960s until shortly before his death in 1988 continuously worked with questions of a moral-theoretical nature.
This volume presents for the first time Luhmann’s most important texts on a theory of morality. Luhmann’s great project – a theory of society – also defines his view of morality, which he did not, as is often the case in philosophy, observe substantially, but functionally. Here moralistic rules and conventions, but legal ones as well, acquire their meaning. According to Luhmann, in order to be able to grasp these, a reflective theory of morality is required, whose contours become clear in the essays collected here.
