We are delighted to announce that three Suhrkamp authors, Benjamín Labatut, Judith Schalansky and Maria Stepanova, have been longlisted for the National Book Award in the Translated Literature category for translations of their works Un Verdor terrible (When We Cease to Understand the World, translated from the Spanish by Adrian Nathan West, to be published by NYRB on September 28, 2021), Verzeichnis einiger Verluste (An Inventory of Losses, translated from the German by Jackie Smith, to be published by New Directions on November 30, 2021) and Памяти памяти (In Memory of Memory, translated from the Russian by Sasha Dugdale, published by New Directions in February 2021).

The National Book Award has been running since 1950 and, along with the Pulitzer Prize, is the most prestigious literary prize in the USA. Since 1989, the award has been presented by the associated non-profit organisation National Book Foundation. The Award for Translated Literature was created in 1967 with the purpose of recognising translated works of remarkable quality or importance published by a U.S publisher. Each of the five categories honoured by the National Book Award is endowed with a prize of 10,000 US dollars (approx. 8,500 euros).

The shortlist will be announced on 5 October and the final award will be presented on 17 November.

Benjamín Labatut

Benjamín Labatut was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 1980. He grew up in The Hague and Buenos Aires and currently lives and works in Santiago de Chile. His literary works have been awarded various prizes, including the 2013 Premio Municipal de Literatura de Santiago de Chile. Un verdor terrible is his third book. It was shortlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize and is longlisted for a National Book Award for Translated Literature in 2021.

Judith Schalansky

Judith Schalansky, born in Greifswald in 1980, lives in Berlin where she works as a writer, editor and book designer. Her work has been translated into more than twenty languages and has won several prizes. Verzeichnis einiger Verluste received the Premio Strega Internazionale 2020 and was longlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize and the Europese Literatuurprijs 2021.

Maria Stepanova

Maria Stepanova, born in Moscow in 1972, is a poet, essayist and journalist. Her works have received numerous international prizes. She has been a formative figure in Moscow’s cosmopolitan literary scenefor a good twenty years. Following the success of her first prose work Памяти памяти, she is now internationally regarded as one of Europe's most important intellectual voices.
