Award-winning writer Arno Schmidt was born in Hamburg in 1914. After World War II, he initially worked as an interpreter, turning his attention to writing in 1947. Two years after his death in 1979, his wife Alice and Jan Philipp Reemtsma founded the Arno Schmidt Foundation.
