January 27 marks the Memorial Day for the Victims of National Socialism in Germany and the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust and commemorates the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp, by the Red Army on 27 January 1945.
In the words of former Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon, »[t]he International Day in memory of the victims of the Holocaust is thus a day on which we must reassert our commitment to human rights. […] We must also go beyond remembrance, and make sure that new generations know this history. We must apply the lessons of the Holocaust to today’s world. And we must do our utmost so that all peoples must enjoy the protections and rights for which the United Nations stands.« On this occasion, we have therefore compiled a list of publications by our authors that deal with the horrors of the Holocaust, with remembrance and responsibility, with our duty to keep vigil and never to forget. These works show the historical events, their repercussions across the generations to this day; they are a reminder that antisemitism and totalitarianism are by no means mere ghosts of the past.
